Tennis Grips for the Perfect Performance

If you want to get the best out of your tennis racket, don’t neglect your tennis racket grips, as the racket handle is the only part of the game device your hand is in constant contact with. Hence, it is crucial to carefully choose your tennis grip and regrip your tennis racket regularly. Tennis grip wraps have a massive influence on the playability and control of your racket. They absorb sweat, provide shock absorption and prevent blistering of your hands. Above all, a good tennis grip tape ensures your racket sits perfectly in your hand. In general, there are two types of tennis grips:

  • Overgrips
  • Basic grips

Basic grips and overgrips should both be replaced regularly, so you always have the perfect grip on your handle for perfect court performance.

Basic Grips

A new tennis racket usually comes with a basic grip around the handle. The basic grip fulfils several functions at the same time. Firstly, they ensure your racket fits nicely into your hand. Secondly, basic grips cushion the vibrations from the impact of the tennis ball, which your arm will thank you for in the long run. Finally, they absorb sweat to keep the handle dry and have a firm grip even during long, hard-fought matches.

Generally, basic grips range from 1.5 to 2.0 millimetres in thickness, which is a lot more than overgrips and why they last significantly longer. Nevertheless, basic grips need to be replaced regularly too. As with tennis strings, we recommend renewing your basic grip in accordance with your weekly match and training frequency. If you play three times a week, for example, you should regrip your tennis racket three times a year.

Overgrips

Additionally, many tennis players like to wrap another tape around the racket handle, called overgrip. This extra tape can enhance the playability of your racket tremendously. Another plus: overgrips are a lot easier to replace than basic grips. They provide additional shock and sweat absorption and protect the basic grip on your racket from wear and tear. If the handle on your racket is a bit too small, simply wrap an overgrip around it, and it will fit. Some players even use more than one overgrip to get their racket handles to the ideal size.

In regards to materials and features, overgrips offer a lot of choices. Some absorb sweat especially well; others provide a particularly solid grip. Thus, you can choose the tennis racket grip best suited to your individual preferences and requirements. Overgrips usually are thinner than basic grips; they range from 0.4 to 1.0 millimetres in thickness. Since they are more delicate and in direct contact with your skin, overgrips are less durable than basic grips. The replacement frequency depends on how often you play and on the overgrip’s material. As soon as you lack a firm grip and the playability has gone down, you know it is time to regrip your tennis racket.
